Office Revolution transformed a historic Kansas City landmark into a future-focused showroom, carefully navigating construction schedules, tenant coordination, and the complexities of working within a historic building. By balancing preservation with innovation, the team delivered a space that feels authentic to Kansas City—honoring the building’s roots as the former headquarters of The Kansas City Star—while integrating modern workplace solutions designed for flexibility, collaboration, and growth.
THE STORY:
As Office Revolution continues to grow, one of our key intentions has been to differentiate ourselves as a dedicated dealer in the Midwest. For our latest expansion, we set our sights on Kansas City, a place whose spirit of grit, growth, and innovation resonated with our mission to distinguish ourselves as a partner within each community we call home.
From its thriving sports culture and infrastructure investment to its appeal among emerging talent, we saw virtually unlimited potential in Kansas City, and particularly in Grand Palace, the home of our new showroom. This historic 300,000 square foot building has been a renovation several years in the making— a feat we are honored to play part in. Our contributions included the incorporation of our own showroom, in addition to providing modular architectural walls to several other tenants throughout the historic building.
Revitalizing a historic structure came with complexities, but our team embraced the process, adapting to shifting schedules and finding creative ways to celebrate the building’s character rather than compete with it. Highlights include: A salvaged fan belt cover transformed into a light fixture; original exposed ceilings and brick were further accentuated; and in partnership with 3D Development, portions of the original 1924 wood floors were preserved. The result reflects the ingenuity and flexibility we bring to every project, while creating a welcoming, layered environment that captivates each person the moment they walk through the door.
Upon entry, visitors are greeted by a custom mural featuring local landmarks alongside nods to our other markets—Chicago, Cleveland, and Columbus. It serves as a striking focal point in the showroom, while thoughtfully curated furnishings distribute color and texture throughout the space. Rich burgundy tones and deep wood finishes, seen in pieces like the Teknion Emote Credenza and Kiosk divider styled with salvaged industrial accents, create an atmosphere that feels warm and collected.
Pops of color are introduced in key areas, such as the jade green upholstery on the Studio TK Sante stools in the collaboration area enclosed by modular Teknion architectural walls with sophisticated curved glass. In the café, mint and sage hues are balanced by additional rich wood tones in the dramatic arched cabinetry from the Teknion Expansion Casework+ collection, enclosing a stunning stone backsplash streaked with orange veining. Designed as a natural gathering point, the café features Stylex Luna banquette seating and soft-form options such as Studio TK Clip chairs, reinforcing comfort and connection.
The showroom reflects the very principles we advocate for our clients—open environments, flexibility, and ease of reconfiguration that support a wide range of meetings, events, and experiences. The space was intentionally created to host community events, industry conversations, and client activations, demonstrating how thoughtful design can seamlessly adapt to evolving needs while fostering connection, productivity, and engagement.
More than a new location, Kansas City’s new showroom represents Office Revolution’s design philosophy in action: community-driven, purposeful, and adaptable. It is an ode to the city’s unique history, while creating space for what’s next.
