The Story

The Dayton’s building has been at the heart of Minnesota’s Twin Cities since 1902. Once the vibrant home of Dayton’s department store, the building has undergone a transformation that marries historic charm with modern workspace.

A confidential professional services firm was the first to set up shop in this incredible space. As a company with multiple locations, the client wanted to match their style and workspace standards from other offices while honoring the historic charm and unique features of the space. Office Revolution was chosen to assemble the furniture package that fit the bill.

“We embraced the challenge of matching the high-end professional services look of their other locations, while respecting the historic aesthetic of the building,” said Shannon Caruso, corporate account manager, Office Revolution. “We love the creative problem solving these types of projects elicit.”

The historic space boasts unique features that allowed for unique workspaces. Most notably are the grand, oversized windows that line a long, prominent wall. Beautiful lounge and collaboration spaces allow people to take advantage of tons of natural light. Long hoteling stations along the windows provide the perfect place to work while taking in beautiful views of downtown Minneapolis.

The team was able to take a historic space and create a space for all the work styles and needs of today’s workforce, including:

  • High-back collaboration booths for impromptu meetings in the center of the open space, while still providing privacy and sound reduction.
  • Innovation Hub with multiple workspaces, including lounge seating, high-top workstations and small group conference tables.
  • A reception area that both greets guests and provides them, and employees, an opportunity to work at either a collaboration table or one of several café tables.
  • Open office workstations that feature height-adjustable desks and personal storage lockers to keep belongings secure and out of sight.

“We are so honored to have worked on the first tenant space in the historic Dayton’s building,” said Bernie Donaldson, founding principal of Office Revolution. “We have been fortunate to do quite a few new spaces in historic buildings and we love the process of breathing new life into old buildings.”
