Founder’s Insights: The Past and Why Office Revolution Began

This series, Founder’s Insights, explores the experiences and decisions that shaped Office Revolution and continue to guide where the company is headed.

Every company has an origin story. For Office Revolution, that story began long before the company existed. Founder Bernie Donaldson built the foundation of the company on responsibility, a strong sense of ownership, and a belief that work should be done with intention. To begin this series, it felt only right to start with his past.

Early Lessons That Shaped Me

The 1970s were a simpler time. As the oldest of four boys in a middle-class household, responsibility was assumed. If I wanted something more than the basics, I had to earn it.

By the time I was ten, I was working any job I could find. I cut lawns, ran a newspaper route, and took on whatever small jobs I could find. Those jobs paid for what I earned on my own and taught me something practical early on: effort and results were directly connected.

In the summers, I helped my grandfather by working at his neighborhood bar and grocery store. He worked long hours, knew his customers, and took pride in what he built. Watching him run his business showed me what ownership meant. It was not freedom without responsibility. It was accountability, consistency, and relationships.

By my early teens, I knew I wanted to work for myself someday, even though I had no idea what that would look like.

Finding My Path in Business

I joined a furniture manufacturer and dealership in New Jersey called Center Core. Over the next several years, I developed my sales and leadership skills and gained firsthand exposure to how dealerships operated, how markets were built, and how decisions made at the top shaped outcomes downstream.

In 1995, I relocated to Chicago to take over a dormant sales territory. I managed my own P&L, hired employees, and built a team grounded in my core values. That territory eventually became the company’s top-performing market. More important than the results was the lesson it reinforced: ownership mattered, especially ownership of relationships, decisions, and outcomes.

The Moment Everything Changed

By the late 1990s, I had left Center Core to work for Teknion as it was emerging as a force in the industry. It was also the height of the dot-com era, when technology was reshaping how people worked and how businesses operated. As computers and connectivity became central to daily work, client expectations shifted, and commercial interiors evolved in response.

As Regional Sales Manager at Teknion, my team and I were building momentum and winning work as organizations looked for solutions better suited to these changing workplace needs. Teknion was growing rapidly in a market that was evolving faster than many traditional models could adapt.

At the same time, the industry’s distribution model was still taking shape. Many dealers represented multiple major manufacturers, and manufacturers like Teknion were closely involved with clients because distribution networks were not yet fully established. As the market matured, clearer lines began to form around how manufacturers and dealers would operate moving forward.

During that period, a major manufacturer issued a letter to dealers who represented multiple product lines, stating that they could no longer sell Teknion if they continued to sell that manufacturer’s line as well.

That moment clarified the opportunity in front of me. Chicago did not have a dedicated Teknion dealer, and the market needed one. I saw the opening and decided to take it. In 2001, I founded Office Revolution, relying heavily on the strong relationship I had built with Teknion to get the business off the ground.

A Foundation That Endures

Office Revolution was never intended to be built around one person. From the beginning, the goal was to create a company that could evolve, led by people who believed in accountability, partnership, and doing the work the right way.

What began as a personal belief in ownership has grown into a company with offices across the Midwest and a continued focus on deliberate growth. The principles that shaped my earliest decisions continue to guide how Office Revolution operates today.

In the next chapters of this series, you will hear directly from the leaders who have helped shape that evolution and who are carrying it forward.
